By definition, resilience is the process of being able to adapt well and bounce back quickly in times of stress like changes, challenges, setbacks, disappointments, and failures. It's very important for dancers because they must utilize and optimize a range of mental qualities to withstand the pressures that they experience.
Dancers face an enormous amount of stressors: Competitive - environmental demands in the form of rivalry, expectations, preparations, pressure ; Organizational - Teacher/ director/ company, group atmosphere and support; and Personal- injuries, diets, career transitioning, academic commitments, relationships.
So, to think that it is not normal to feel any kind of anxiety, stress, or a feeling of panic in any moment of your career as a dancer... it's crazy!!! This is just to show you, dancer, you are not alone! AND, there is a way to deal with all this craziness.
There are factors that protect from the potential negative effect of stressors: Positive personality, Motivation, Confidence, Focus, perceived social support.
The second most important thing is Hope. High-hope individuals are able to envision alternative routes and strategies in the face of goal blockage, and display high levels of dedication and energy in pursuing desirable goals. See a challenge when there is a threat.
But, THE most important thing of all is.... you may not believe it...... but it's, LOVE YOURSELF LIKE CRAZY!!! Many people believe that motivation is the key to success, but let me tell you a little secret - being your best self requires a lifelong practice of self-love and ambition. It requires acknowledging that you are doing the best you can in the present and demands that you never stop striving to grow and become even better in the future.
Honor wherever you are on your journey right now. Use the affirmation below to inspire you when you need to reconnect with self-love. You might enjoy chanting this phrase aloud creating art or writing poetry inspired by it, or dancing in an improvisation:
"I love myself in the now. I accept that I am doing the best I can, and as I know better, I will learn to do better"
Action step: The importance of gratitude
Before you go to bed, every night, give thanks to one thing that you have never thought of being thankful for before - which means you need to be mindful during the day; you need to be on the look out for things that suddenly touch you. (ex. it's an amazing thing when a face lights up with a smile).
This will increase your alertness, your enthusiasm, your determination and your energy.
